COMIC . THE CASE OF THE CHINESE CEMETERY

A mystery in Victoria, a missing 105 years old body, an enigmatic Chinese lady, a bone
collector, a pair of thugs, a Russian girlfriend and a private investigator...

The Project: Illustrate the adventures of A.C. Hessfog Private Investigator with a graphic novel using a film noir style.
His cases are filled with intrigues and mystery, and he particularly favoured an uncanny and mystical clientele.
His methods are unorthodox.
The first three volumes occur on the West Coast of Canada, in Victoria, Vancouver island.

About the main character: Hessfog PI: Born at the end of the 60's in the South of Europe, it's not until the end of the 80's that Hessfog moved to North Africa, then Casablanca to finally relocate in North America.
He previously had, at 18 years old of age, open his own private investigator agency that he ran up to this very day. His cases brought him to various part of the world.

About the illustrator: Sergio Foglio: is an Illustrator/Photographer who spends his life on the West Coast of North America.
He was born in France, and moved to North America in the early 90's.
He has been illustrating digitally for the last 14 years, and went back to comic book work in the late 2012.

About the comic: The Case of the Chinese Cemetery: Volume 1 of a series of 3, the book relates the case of a missing Chinese skeleton, and how Hessfog is going to find out what really happens.
As the first book of the series, it introduces many of the main characters, and establishes their inter relations.
It also gives us a taste to come of the uncanny methods used by Hessfog to solve his cases.

About the style: Film Noir: The definition of Film Noir  is as follow:
- a style or genre of cinematographic film marked by a mood of pessimism, fatalism, and menace. The term was originally applied (by a group of French critics) to American thriller or detective films made in the period 1944–54 and to the work of directors such as Orson Welles, Fritz Lang, and Billy Wilder.
In the early project, Hessfog and Foglio decided to opt for the Film Noir black and white style, giving the feeling that the world the character lives in is monochromatic with, somehow, no possible escape. To attend this goal, it was decided to relate the facts as they actually happen, to base every single illustration on reality, every location based on Victoria true location, every landscape, every building, everything had to reflect reality, all the way to the music Hessfog was actually listening during the events.
The choice of medium was Foglio's alone. He drew the entire comic digitally, using Adobe Illustrator ©, a digital drawing pen and a Wacom © tablet.
It was also decided to add a light yellowish papery texture to add to the feel.

About the collaboration: Hessfog/Foglio: Foglio met Hessfog few years ago, through a common friend they had, Joanna Steinfield, then free lance journalist at the Time Columnist, the Victoria newspaper.
In December 2012, Foglio started to illustrate Hessfog's adventure.
They regularly met and had long conversations, even though, it was rarely unrelated to the project.
Foglio relates that few times, Hessfog opened to him in a more personal way, which helped him understand the complex character a little more.
Their relationship to this day is purely professional.
